Lizzy's Dark Creation

Lizzy's Dark Creation

The Blog Design for Lizzy’s Dark Fiction had a very specific spec’d out idea process. Lizzy wanted a warrior female, with red hair, in a pose like she had just thrown a spear. The spear should be embedded in a “bad” book on the other side of the design. Lizzy wanted a dark feel to the design, to go with her “Dark Fiction” theme. The creation process began with two sketches: While I was pleased with these sketches, I wasn’t totally satisfied, there was something wrong. The girls looked like they were stabbing, not throwing. So, I went back to the drawing board and began looking up images of people throwing spears. Their final pose usually ended with the arm raised and forward and covering the face. Since most avatars are the central focal point of the design, the face usually compelling the reader to feel an emotion…I couldn’t hide her face. I switched to Lizzy The Impaler instead of Lizzy the Spear Thrower. I told Lizzy to imagine a spear in her hand. She came back with that she looks like she is standing like the Little Caesar guy…um Pizza Pizza? Boots and a different color cloak will make it this a winner…and it did. Add some steampunk elements to this bad warrior chick and it is sealed up nicely.  One part done. Now for the rest of the design. Each little piece was put together to match the girl. A warrior, she had to take out bad books. At first I placed her in the woods, with a smokey feel — but it didn’t work. The books weren’t...

Anime Awesome?

When I was approached by Kristin of MyParaHangover, she wasn’t quite sure of what she wanted, just that she wanted a great avatar. The last one she had been using was anime and she wanted to emulate that one, but make it better. Never having illustrated anime before, I wasn’t sure if I could accomplish this…but then again, anime is just another type of illustration. The results was a design that was one of the most challenging I’ve completed in a long time. But, I think it was worth it. What do you think?   Kristin MyParaHangover Holy crap again… Okay… love, love, love!!  Can I order my girl’s boots somewhere???  I really need them…      ...

A Wicked Design and Custom Avatar Creation

The design was created for Wicked Little Pixie a group book blog that specialized in genre fiction. Their tag line is “We Snark Because We Care.” Their blog is fun and trendy and the design was created to reflect that. The avatar was actually drawn to resemble the main blogger, Natasha, with a few embellishments of course.

Avatar Goodness…Reader & Writer

Avatar Goodness…Reader & Writer

Marisa, my latest client wanted two custom avatars for use on her blog, business cards, you name it. She specified custom designs (not stock) with an Asian look, one as a writer, one as a reader. The reader was to be more alternative looking. Being custom designs they were sketched out beforehand and then brought into Illustrator to be traced as a vector. After their bones were laid in Illustrator the images were brought into Photoshop to be shaded and some real photography added. The Process: The Paper Sketch The sketch was placed in Illustrator and “drawn” over to be made into a vector. The backgrounds are real...
Teens Read & Write Launches

Teens Read & Write Launches

I was approached my the teenage geniuses behind Teens Read & Write: Alyssa, Jake & Gregory to redo their blog. They already had a fancy wordpress design, but another blogger had popped up with the same design and they were ready for a new one…so luckily they came to me to *Pimp their blog*. (I’m trying to be young and hip – is that still in?) I just want to say these guys were the most hilarious clients I have ever worked with.  They definitely made my job a lot more interesting and I think if I would have gotten an email like this everyday I would have given them a 50% discount! This was the initial go-by email:Overall the design can’t be too girlie (because the two nimrods would smother me in my sleep), or too romantic (refer to previous ‘smothering’ comment) and really, I’m not much into that either. We all like more of the dark, mysterious and dangerous vibe, but we also enjoy wit and humor thrown in. Am I making any sense? Too much info? Does this help at all?Okay, the two dorks just came back in and here are Jake’s comments. I’ll give you quotes:JAKE: “It must have wizards fighting dragons that look like books. Then I could photoshop Gregory’s face on one of the dragons and put my face on one of the majestic wizards so it looks I’m defeating Gregory. Alyssa could be a heavily cleavaged princess in distress. Wouldn’t that be awesome!”GREGORY: “Wait, why am I the wimp?”JAKE: “You’re not a wimp. You’re a dragon.”GREGORY: “But I’m a wimpy dragon if...
